Ok, so I haven’t figured out how to make Alexa clean my house like Cinderella…yet. But I’m working on it. In the meantime, I have figured out that she is much more than a glorified alarm clock or DJ. Although, you should know that alarms are “not currently supported on this device,” like they are on the Echo. This is a more basic version of Alexa. It doesn’t have her full functionality.
I’m not sure what the target demographic for this product is, but I am a professional female in my early thirties, who is in a committed relationship. That is a nice way of saying that my partying days are behind me and my boyfriend and I spend a lot of time binge watching stuff on the sofa. Yes. We are suburban couch potatoes. No shame here. Also, I am an Amazon Prime member, but do not have a 4k TV.
I used to have a Roku that I used for Netflix and Hulu. However, I was more interested in free shipping, so I moved to Prime and got a Fire TV Stick when it was offered for $19.99. For me the stick is a glorified HDMl cable. You could get the same benefits by connecting your laptop to your TV. It’s less cumbersome, but that’s about it. I wanted it because it said it could mirror your device’s screen onto your TV. It didn’t explain clearly enough that the only “device” it could do that with was a Kindle. That is why I didn’t order the Echo when it came out. It sounded cool but I couldn’t figure out what it actually did. Since then, my father got one for my mother, who had a stroke, and it is awesome.

Then I learned that Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound (AC3) is only supported with Prime Video. That means that any 5.1/DTS/DD audio from Plex, Netflix, etc., is all in 2.0 audio, downgraded. This is unacceptable–grounds for immediate return, and honestly, shame on you Amazon for misleading consumers! An email from Amazon support confirmed this for me.
Honestly, if a “new” device can’t do basic things that the Roku 3 could do in 2012, it has no business being compared to any of the current generation of media players.

But wow, I am very disappointed to say the least.
Let me break my problems down –
I switched from the NVidia Shied TV (worked wonderfully) to this device because I wanted something for video streaming. But so far, my expectations have been met only with disappointment. Why?
-My stuff: Pioneer 830k (receiver), Sony 65XBR850A (4K TV). I am running the Amazon Fire TV to the Pioneer 830k and then the receiver to my one 4K 2.22 compliant HDMI input. Again, worked flawlessly with my Shield TV.
….. my issues:
-When I load up a Amazon Prime 4K video, it looks and sounds great! BUT! When I leave the video, the screen goes black. I have to power off my receiver and turn it back on to be at the Fire TV menu again. Oh and sometimes, I can get back the menu without having to power cycle the receiver but 9/10, I am unable to.
-Netflix is giving me 4K but no 5.1? HUH? Others are reporting this issue too. When folks ask about this issue, they are offered a refund for their box. Does Amazon really think it’s acceptable for folks to use a 4K streaming box without 5.1 to Netflix? How did the early reviewers miss this vital flaw?
……….. suffice to say, I hope this is software-related and to see incoming patches because the box is neat! I want to keep it but right now, it’s half baked and I feel like I have paid $100 for beta testing a product for Amazon. Or it’s hello Roku 4 or Shield TV.

I got mine last night and couldn’t wait to hook it up.
Hooked it up and the first thing I checked out was 4K content from Amazon Prime. My home internet connection is 150 MB/s.
Checked out a few of the 4K Prime offerings and found that the picture was software and in some ways out of focus. Also noticed watching a few videos that if the camera panned left or right I would get video judder and skipping of frames. I did not find any way of getting on screen stats to see how fast the video was being downloaded or the true resolution being received on the FireTV box.
I checked out Netflix and played a few 4K videos on there as well and again I was disappointed with the video quality being displayed. I also noticed that the Netflix App had no 3D shelf for 3D movies. However searching for 3D did bring up a number of movies. Selecting two different 3D movies it was shown on the Netflix box that the movie may be displayed in 3D on compatible devices. So played the movies and it did not pass through 3D, instead only a 2D Version was shown.
I went in the built in Amazon and Netflix apps built into my TV and tried watching the same videos I watched in my tests on the FireTV and the picture quality was much better and more lifelike. The 3D movies immediately switched my TV into 3D mode. This showed me that the Internet was not causing any of the PQ issues I was seeing through the FireTV box. It also showed me that the FireTV can not passthrough 3D correctly to the TV.
My FireTV was hooked up directly to my TV (via the Samsung SEK-3500 Evolution box) so I did not test surround sound. Initial reports are that while the FireTV does pass through Dolby Digital 5.

I wish you could use Alexa to search inside the apps that you download (Netflix and Hulu). Or at least be able to only see and search the videos that are free with prime. Read more

It is much faster than the netflixs on my TV. The voice works good but will only search amazon service and not netflix so that is a bummer.
Great product works really well THANKS.
Useless product for Seiki TVs, I purchased this at a local Best Buy. Nowhere in the outside of the box did it say HDCP 2.2 was a requirement for 4K. Read more

Best streaming box on the market! Looking forward to live tv streaming soon…..
The 4k streaming is great. It would be nice if Netflix would update their app to allow for 4k streaming, too. Read more
